Since 1974 Snecma has teamed up with GE to develop and produce a family of turbofan engines developing 18,500 to 34,000 lb of thrust for use on mainline commercial jets (over 100 seats). The CFM56 is designed, developed, produced and marketed through CFM, a company equally owned by the two partners.
The CFM56 is the most reliable engine of its generation. Its success is partly due to a constant stream of innovative solutions. Since the outset, various research & technology programs (such as TECH56 and LEAP56™) have helped meet and anticipate both customer requirements and aviation regulations. Two prime areas of focus are reducing engine operating costs and environmental impact.
In mid-2008, CMF announced the launch of LEAP, a new engine intented for the generation of single-aisle comercial jets.
